‘Rakhadta bhatakta’ is a Gujarati phrase that roughly translates to ‘while wandering around’. This website is the portal through which I share my love of languages (Gujarati, Hindi and English. In that order.) and stories in the form of travel-writings, essays, and translations.
This website started as a hobby-blog in 2012. As a young person who dreamt of being the writer of a ‘blockbuster blog’ with many readers around the world, it was very tempting to start writing in English. The likelihood of my mostly mediocre writings sticking out there somewhere would be way high if I wrote in English.
But, when I thought a little harder I felt like an idiot even considering not writing in Gujarati. I grew up reading some very very very fine Gujarati literature. In fact, for the longest time, I read exclusively in Gujarati. A majority of what I loved happened to be written before the 90s. As I started outgrowing myself and the literature that I read, I started looking for a variety in the writing style and the content. I found it incredibly difficult getting my hands on contemporary Gujarati literature by younger authors that I’d enjoy reading.
So, in a naive youthful zeal, I decided that perhaps I could become the ‘young contemporary Gujarati writer’ that I was looking for in the world and started writing what I thought I’d like to read, starting with my accounts of travel to different places. Very soon I realized I have a whole lot of ideas and opinions that I wanted to write down and that’s how the essays were born.
A few years passed with just those two forms of writing. Just as I thought that would be it for me, I found this amazing literary community that made me realize just how badly I wanted to share my favourite Gujarati literature with them but I couldn’t because they didn’t know the language. This kickstarted me on my translation journey with the language that’s the closest to Gujarati, that I know the best and has a bigger audience – Hindi.
With that, I hope to be able to broaden my horizons with literature and hope to be able to share some of that love for words, ideas, and stories with you all.
